PTA Pot Luck Dinner - November 8, 2006

A Glorious Feast and A Tribute to Sasha Nyary!

On Wednesday, November 8, following the PTA's general meeting, the PS 261 community came together to share and break bread -- and many other delicious foods. Families brought dishes reflecting their countries of origin -- or simply their favorite foods. Student volunteers wrote descriptions of the dishes -- including noodle kugel, Turkish greens, spicy tomato sauce, spinach pies, Hungarian goulash, meat patties, assorted bean and rice dishes, chicken wings, and many, many more. Desserts were equally glorious. A pavlova (a specialty of New Zealand), cakes, pies, and other tasty treats quickly disappeared. The cafeteria was filled to the brim, even with heavy rains outside.

At the close of the dinner, Zip paid tribute to the many contributions of mom, Sasha Nyary, an active member of the PTA and mother of third-grader Lily. Sasha, David and Lily are moving to Amherst, Massachusetts. Sasha spoke eloquently about her love for PS 261, Zip, the wonderful teachers, and families.

Thanks to all who contributed to the potluck. Joan Kalkut Moogan, Janine Tayor, Keisha Hall, and Rachel Godsil coordinated the event, but many others helped ready the tables, cooked wonderful dishes, and cleaned up afterward. Special thanks to Nadine Jervis, Carole Kelly, Pam Pottischman, Caroline O'Hara.

For all who missed the potluck and heard about the great food -- don't despair. We are hoping to compile a PS 261 International cookbook with recipes from the potluck and other events. Anyone who has a recipe they'd like to share, please email it to Janine Taylor.
